The montane rainforest of Nyungwe Forest in the south is an important conservation area for chimpanzees and a whole host of primates, from the endemic Rwenzori Colobus to Dent’s monkey and grey-checked mangabey. Gishwati-Mukura National Park holds the world’s only population of of golden monkeys outside the Virunga massif.

In this section of Rwanda safaris, visitors have an opportunity to discover all the parks from Volcanoes National Park that supports in excess of 70 mammal’s species in its various alpine and sub-alpine habitats. Of these the mountain gorilla is the well-known, but the bamboo forests are critical habitat to another equally range –restricted and endangered primates, the golden monkeys. Black –fronted duiker and bushbuck inhabit the bamboo forest, while the tracks and faeces of both buffalo and elephant are commonly seen here.

In this same section of across Rwanda Tours, guests will explore the Akagera National Park, a unique Savannah ecosystem with at least 90 mammal including the giraffes, warthogs. The papyrus swamp areas are home to specialized, rarely seen Sitatunga, Elephants tend to concentrate around the lakes which are inhabited by large populations of hippos-one of Africa’s highest densities.

Akagera now boasts a healthy population of lions, introduced in 2015 after a 20 year absence, black rhinos were introduced in 2017 and 5 more rhinos were brought in 2019.

Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda is one of the oldest rain forests in Africa. The famous Chimpanzee Park in Rwanda is abundantly blessed with rich biodiversity that one cannot find elsewhere in both Rwanda and the East African region.

The Park is believed to be the heart of Rwanda’s wildlife, including a small population of unique chimpanzees as well as 12 other species of primate, including the L’Hoest’s monkey endemic to the Albertine Rift and spectacularly beautiful bird species.
